Meet The Team at Compass Construction
The beauty of working with a small and highly skilled team like Compass Construction is that clients have direct access to key personnel and those who are responsible for project work. The Compass team is not only highly motivated, with a far reaching skills set, but is passionate about the business and has an enviable work ethic that results in repeat custom and recommendations.
Investing in People
Compass Construction values and encourages every member of the team and actively works with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to enable young people to learn and develop the skills they need to work in the construction industry. The company has an Apprenticeship Scheme that actively promotes progression, development and responsibility, whilst also offering valuable work experience for young people.
As a member of the Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors (RICS), Richard is usually the first point of contact for clients as he oversees the vast majority of project tenders, the financial management of the business and cost control. Richard has a degree in Quantity Surveying and is a Chartered Surveyor (MRICS). Prior to establishing Compass Construction he spent many years working for a blue chip property developer, followed by a regional independent housebuilder.
Richard lives in Surrey with his wife and their four young boys. When he’s not an unpaid taxi service running between sports clubs, he can be found trekking the Surrey Hills, but he says he’s never likely to see fellow Director Steve on a walk as he’s afraid of getting wet! In addition to being a keen outdoor person and playing golf when time permits, Richard and his family are also involved with a local church and various youth work groups.
Steve has worked in the construction industry for nearly 30 years and specialises in the design and development of individual private houses and light commercial projects. Whilst Steve is a founder Director of Compass Construction, he’s never happier than when he’s on-site. Over the years, and rising through the ranks, Steve has been a brick-layer, site manager and contracts manager before becoming a Project and Construction Director for a leading firm.
On-site, Steve is known as Mr Fix It, as he’s able to find solutions and ways to overcome any of the inevitable design and technical issues that are associated with any scale of building work.
Married with two young daughters, Steve is a keen cyclist and hill walker, but doesn’t like getting wet so the bike and boots only ever make an appearance on sunny days – much to the hilarity of his fellow colleagues!!
Having started his working life as an apprentice carpenter at the tender age of 16, Dougie still enjoys all aspects of carpentry, from traditional hand-cut roofs to hardwood staircases, installing kitchens and creating bespoke fitted units – this is a man who loves his tools and creating beauty from wood.
During his career, Dougie has also spent a number of years as a Specialist Foreman Carpenter, in addition to 6 years as a Site Manager building large bespoke houses. His skills are invaluable to Compass Construction and its many clients who look to him to deliver unusual and often quirky features – he also really enjoys providing design solutions and bespoke properties and takes the view ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’!
When he’s not working, Dougie’s ideal day includes a long walk to a country pub for lunch accompanied by his wife Sue and their Cocker Spaniel. He is very proud of his three sons aged 16, 18 and 20, but very pleased that his days of being the family taxi are over, which gives him a lot more time to relish the joys of the RHS at Wisley and his pursuit of the perfect garden
Peter has worked in the construction industry for over 30 years and has many skills under his belt including being a qualified Electrician, Site Manager and Contracts Manager. Peter’s skills base is not only multi-disciplined, which makes him a fabulous asset, but like the rest of the team he also takes enormous pride in his work and goes the extra distance to ensure clients receive the ultimate service.
Peter loves football and is a very keen Liverpool supporter (his colleagues don’t quite understand why!!) and he also has a keen passion for renovating interesting properties, which he does very successfully with his wife’s assistance. Any other spare time he has is spent watching Cricket and walking the family dog.
Groundworks and Landscaping
Howard attended school at the Thurfield in Leatherhead and left to take an apprenticeship NVQ at East Surrey College in Trowel Occupation. Howard graduated in 2015 and now works as part of the Groundwork and Landscaping Team. He has a very keen interest in steam engines and can often be seen on the weekend at the Surrey Society of Model Engineers Miniature Railway in Leatherhead. Howard also has the outstanding honour of a Queen Scout Award, the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement.
Barnaby attended school at The Priory in Dorking and is now working as an apprentice for Compass Construction, whilst studying carpentry on day-release at East Surrey College.
Outside of his working time Barnaby loves to socialise and is a highly accomplished drummer, as well as being a highly respected member of a youth leadership team in Dorking.
